Bigger than The Shining



I watched Nicholas Ray’s 1956 film Bigger Than Life and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, and realised that they’re both movies made in conservative times, about men scared of being fathers. I scribbled notes as I watched them at the same time – one of the most intense experiences I’ve had. The old film is on the left of the page, the younger one on the right. 






Filmkrant magazine at the Rotterdam Film Fest gave me a few thousand euros, so I intercut the films, to make a new one, Bigger Than the Shining. We cleared zero copyright.

As Jack Nicholson wielded an axe in that awful scene in The Shining, so I used an axe to destroy the hard drive of my film. But I kept a copy. Here it is:
