What is this Film Called Love?
After The Story of Film, I was exhausted. I was in Mexico City/DF with three days with nothing to do. Such a treat. I had a little $100 Flip camera with me so I walked this vast city, imagining that Sergei Eisenstein was with me. I ended up in a zoo, filming this deer.
When I got back home, I sketched an idea for a film about my 3 days:
After the constraints of The Story of Film: An Odyssey, this would be free, punky, dreamlike.
I had no script, schedule, producer, production company or crew. I wrote each scene on a card...
...and imagined that the film was narrated by a woman, then me and then the deer! Making this completely freed me. It was my new start. It cost £10 to shoot (more, later, to clear copyright). PJ Harvey allowed me to use one of her great songs, as did Tony Christie. Not two people who regularly appear in the same sentence.
